Maintenance and improvement work on the railways in the Stockholm-Mälardalen region may result in parts of the railway network being fully or partially closed during different periods. Here, we list the major track works that will affect Mälartåg's train traffic in the future

Maintenance and improvement work on the railways in the Stockholm-Mälardalen region may result in parts of the railway network being fully or partially closed during different periods. Here, we list the major track works that will affect Mälartåg's train traffic in the future

The railways in Stockholm-Mälardalen are continuously being maintained and improved. This means that parts of the railway network periodically need to be completely, or partially shut down.

The information about planned track work is preliminary, exactly how the trains will run during this time is determined in more detail closer to that period.

Please note that travel time may be longer than usual when trains are replaced by buses.

Track work - Month by month 2025

June

Eskilstuna–Arboga/Örebro
Eskilstuna–Västerås

Period: June 9 – July 4

Affected lines: Örebro–Eskilstuna–Stockholm–Uppsala, Linköping–Eskilstuna–Västerås–Sala–Uppsala

Train traffic will be affected in various ways due to track maintenance work west of Eskilstuna, where tracks, rails, and switches are being replaced.

Eskilstuna–Arboga/Örebro:
Trains are replaced by buses on weekdays. On weekends during the daytime, trains will run to and from Arboga. June 11–17 and June 22–July 3, all traffic on this route will be replaced by buses in the evenings from 7:30 PM.

Eskilstuna–Västerås:
Trains will run hourly, stopping at Kvicksund and Kolbäck. However, half-hourly departures during peak hours are cancelled and replaced ith direct buses between Västerås and Eskilstuna. From June 11–17 and June 22–July 3, all evening trains from 7:30 PM will be replaced by buses.

August

Period: August 11 – October 5
Affected line: Linköping–Eskilstuna–Västerås–Sala–Uppsala

Train traffic will be suspended and replaced by buses between Morgongåva and Sala during the track maintenance period, as tracks and overhead lines are being replaced as part of the Dalabanan railway upgrade.

Replacement buses will run the route Sala – Heby Station – Heby Square – Morgongåva (and vice versa). These buses connect to/from trains in Morgongåva. During peak hours, additional replacement buses will operate on the route Sala – Heby Station – Heby Square – Uppsala Central Station (and vice versa). Replacement buses depart before the scheduled train departure time.

On the first and last day of the maintenance work, trains will also be replaced by buses between Sala and Ransta. As the work approaches, updated travel times will be available in the app or on the website.


Uppsala–Storvreta

Periods: August 15, 1 PM – August 18, 5 AM and August 30 – September 1, 5 AM
Affected line: Uppsala–Gävle

Buses replace trains between Uppsala and Vattholma from August 15 at 00:00 to August 18 at 05:00 and from August 30 at 00:00 to September 1 at 05:00. Transfers between bus and train occur in Vattholma. Replacement buses will not stop in Storvreta.
Travelers from Storvreta going toward Tierp/Gävle (and vice versa) can take trains from Storvreta Station. For travel between Storvreta and Uppsala, it is recommended to use UL’s bus services.
The maintenance work will affect travel and departure/arrival times. Updated schedules will be available in the app or on the website.


Uppsala–Sala

Periods: August 15, 1 PM – August 18, 5 AM and August 30 – September 1, 5 AM
Affected line: Linköping–Eskilstuna–Västerås–Sala–Uppsala

Buses will replace trains between Uppsala and Sala from August 15 at 00:00 to August 18 at 05:00, and from August 30 at 00:00 to September 1 at 05:00.
Closer to the maintenance dates, updated departure and travel times will be available in the app or on the website.

This disruption is due to work by the Swedish Transport Administration on a grade-separated railway-road crossing north of Uppsala Central Station.


September

Uppsala–Storvreta

Period: September 20 – September 22, 5 AM
Affected line: Uppsala–Gävle

Buses replace trains between Uppsala and Vattholma. Transfer between bus and train takes place in Vattholma. Replacement buses do not stop in Storvreta.
Passengers from Storvreta traveling toward Tierp/Gävle (and vice versa) can take the train from Storvreta Station. For travel between Storvreta and Uppsala, UL buses are recommended.


Uppsala–Sala

Period: September 20 – September 22, 5 AM
Affected line: Linköping–Norrköping–Eskilstuna–Västerås–Sala–Uppsala

Trains are replaced with buses between Uppsala and Sala.
This is due to the ongoing construction of a grade-separated railway-road crossing north of Uppsala Central Station.


October

Uppsala–Sala

Period: October 24 – October 27, 5 AM
Affected line: Linköping–Norrköping–Eskilstuna–Västerås–Sala–Uppsala

Trains are replaced with buses between Uppsala and Sala.


Uppsala–Gävle

Period: October 24 – October 27, 5 AM
Affected line: Uppsala–Gävle

Buses replace trains between Uppsala and Vattholma from October 24 at 00:00 to October 27 at 05:00. Transfers between bus and train take place in Vattholma. Replacement buses do not stop in Storvreta. Travelers to/from Tierp or Gävle can use the train from Storvreta Station. For travel between Storvreta and Uppsala, UL buses are recommended.
The maintenance will affect travel and departure/arrival times.

This is due to the construction of a grade-separated crossing for trains and cars north of Uppsala Central Station.


Stockholm–Knivsta–Uppsala

Period: October 24 – October 27, 5 AM
Affected line: Örebro–Eskilstuna–Stockholm–Uppsala

Due to track work in Knivsta, no trains will operate between Knivsta and Uppsala from Friday, October 24 at 00:00 until Monday, October 27 at 05:00.
Trains on the Örebro/Arboga–Eskilstuna–Stockholm–Uppsala route (9xx trains) will terminate in Stockholm.
Trains on the Stockholm–Märsta–Knivsta–Uppsala route will terminate in Knivsta. Buses will operate between Knivsta and Uppsala.


November

Vagnhärad–Södertälje Syd

Period: November 14–17
Affected line: Norrköping–Nyköping–Stockholm

Trains will be replaced by buses between Vagnhärad and Södertälje Syd, with transfers to other trains to/from Stockholm.
This is due to work near Södertälje and Järna, part of the construction of the new Ostlänken railway.
Trains between Norrköping and Vagnhärad will operate as usual.


Hallsberg–Södertälje Syd

Period: November 14, 10 PM – November 17, 5 AM
Affected line: Hallsberg–Katrineholm–Stockholm

Trains are replaced by buses between Hallsberg, Katrineholm, and Södertälje Syd from Friday, November 14 at 22:00 to Monday, November 17 at 05:00, with connections to/from other trains to Stockholm.
This is due to work on the new Ostlänken railway.


Hallsberg–Katrineholm

Period: November 21–24
Affected line: Hallsberg–Katrineholm–Stockholm

Trains are replaced by buses between Hallsberg and Katrineholm from Friday evening, November 21, until early Monday, November 24.
