On Mälartåg departures within Uppsala County, you can travel using Mälartåg’s own single tickets, the Movingo period ticket, as well as UL tickets. Ticket Information for Mälartåg in Uppsala County

On Mälartåg departures within Uppsala County, you can travel using Mälartåg’s own single tickets, the Movingo period ticket, as well as UL tickets. However, it can sometimes be difficult to know which tickets and conditions apply—especially if you want to travel across the county border to Stockholm.

  • UL's single and period tickets (including 24- and 72-hour tickets) are valid on Mälartåg within UL's area of validity. This applies to all passenger categories.
  • On routes where UL tickets, Mälartåg single tickets, and Movingo are all valid, the terms and conditions may differ—for example, for passenger categories and rules regarding accompanying children.
  • A route-specific Movingo ticket is only valid on the regional train route stated on the ticket.
    Example: A Movingo Stockholm–Knivsta is valid for travel with Mälartåg between Stockholm and Knivsta, including intermediate stations, but not beyond to Uppsala.
  • Local transport in Knivsta—meaning UL’s buses and SL’s commuter trains on the Uppsala–Arlanda C route—is included in a Movingo ticket that includes UL local transport validity. However, this does not include Mälartåg’s regional trains between Knivsta and Uppsala.

Can I travel with my UL ticket on Mälartåg?
Yes, UL’s tickets are valid on Mälartåg within UL’s area:

  • North of Uppsala: To Gävle and Sala

  • South of Uppsala: To Märsta and Arlanda

Is a UL or Mälartåg single ticket valid on SJ trains between Arlanda/Märsta–Knivsta–Uppsala?
No. To travel on SJ trains on this route, you need to buy an SJ ticket. UL or Mälartåg tickets are not valid. Movingo is valid on SJ trains on this route only if you have a Movingo All Routes ticket and are traveling with SJ Intercity on the Linköping–Stockholm–Uppsala–Tierp line.

I have a Movingo Stockholm–Knivsta with local travel for SL and UL. Is it valid to Uppsala?
No. Your Movingo is valid only for travel with Mälartåg on the Stockholm–Knivsta route, including Märsta and Arlanda.

To continue from Knivsta to Uppsala with Mälartåg, you need to either:

  • Buy a Movingo Stockholm–Uppsala (about SEK 160 more per month), or

  • Buy a separate Mälartåg or UL single ticket for the Knivsta–Uppsala stretch (SEK 39 for adults).

Why isn't my Movingo with UL validity valid on Mälartåg between Knivsta and Uppsala?
Movingo is a regional period ticket with specific routes and its own ticket terms. A route-specific Movingo ticket is only valid on the regional train route stated on the ticket. A Stockholm–Knivsta Movingo ticket is not valid for further travel on Mälartåg to Uppsala. Even if local travel validity for UL is included, it does not cover Mälartåg’s regional train between Knivsta and Uppsala. Therefore, you need a separate ticket for that part of the journey.

Can I travel with Mälartåg Stockholm–Uppsala via Märsta/Arlanda and Knivsta with an SL+UL ticket?
No, not with Mälartåg. SL tickets are not valid on Mälartåg, but with the combined SL+UL ticket, you can travel the entire route using SL’s commuter train.

If you want to travel with Mälartåg, you must either:

  • buy a Mälartåg single ticket for the whole route, or

  • buy a Mälartåg single ticket for Stockholm–Märsta and use a UL ticket for Märsta–Uppsala.

How far south can I travel with a UL ticket if I’m heading to Stockholm?
You can travel with Mälartåg to Märsta or Arlanda using a UL ticket. After that, you need a Mälartåg single ticket for Märsta–Stockholm, which you can easily buy in the Mälardalstrafik app.

Note that UL and Mälartåg tickets have different terms, for example:

  • Rules for children traveling free of charge

  • Pensioners pay the adult fare with Mälartåg’s single ticket

What are the rules for traveling with children on Mälartåg within UL’s area?
It depends on which ticket you have:

  • With a Mälartåg single ticket or Movingo:
