Where to apply for compensation

For your application to be handled correctly, you need to contact the appropriate customer service.
  • If you are travelling with a ticket from Sörmlandstrafiken, Östgötatrafiken, UL or VL on Mälartåg, you should apply through the respective customer service.
  • If you are travelling with a Movingo ticket on SJ departures, you should apply through SJ Customer Service.
  • If you are travelling with a Movingo ticket on Tåg i Bergslagen, you should apply through Länstrafiken Örebro or VL, depending on which county your journey starts in.
    • Example: If your journey starts in Östergötland, you should apply for compensation through Länstrafiken Örebro.

How compensation is calculated

Compensation is based on the train’s entire route, from the departure station to the final destination, not on how far you personally travel.

Compensation for Movingo

With Movingo, you have enhanced rights. Compensation is provided regardless of the train’s distance.

Delay of 20–39 minutes
We compensate 50% of the average price per journey.

Delay of 40–59 minutes
We compensate 75% of the average price per journey.

Delay of 60 minutes or more
We compensate 100% of the average price per journey.

How the average price is calculated

The average price per journey is calculated by dividing the price of the period ticket by the estimated number of travel days for the respective ticket.

If your ticket was purchased on or after 8 January:

  • Movingo 5/30 – 10
  • Movingo 30 days – 30
  • Movingo 90 days – 90
  • Movingo annual – 365

If your ticket was purchased before 8 January:

  • Movingo 5/30 – 10
  • Movingo 30 days – 22
  • Movingo 90 days – 66
  • Movingo annual – 264

Good to know about Movingo

  • Compensation is only paid when a Mälartåg service is delayed.
  • Compensation is not paid for missed trains due to delayed local public transport.
  • If you miss a connecting local transport service to your final destination when the Mälartåg delay is less than 20 minutes, no compensation is paid.
  • Total compensation can never exceed the purchase price of the ticket.

Resplus ticket

Mälartåg is part of Resplus, a collaboration between train operators, regional public transport authorities, and domestic ferry services. If you travel with Mälartåg as part of a Resplus journey and experience a delay, compensation is provided in accordance with Samtrafiken’s travel conditions for Resplus.

Rebooking and replacement travel

In the event of delays, cancelled trains, or if you miss a connection, you are entitled to receive information about alternative rebooking options.

If you have not received information about rebooking within 100 minutes from the original departure time, you may arrange replacement travel yourself by train or bus.

You may then receive compensation for the journey you arranged, provided that you can present a receipt.

The right to arrange your own journey applies only after 100 minutes and if no information about rebooking has been provided.

Payment of compensation

Compensation is paid via Swedbank’s Payment System (SUS). To receive your compensation as quickly as possible, you need to have a bank account registered there. If you already have a registered account, the compensation will be paid directly into your bank account.

If you do not have a registered account, you need to register your account via Swedbank’s account register. Registering an account results in faster payment. Register your account in Swedbank’s account register.

If you choose not to register an account in SUS, the compensation will instead be paid via a payment voucher, which can for example be redeemed digitally. Payment via voucher normally involves a longer processing time.

If, for any reason, you do not wish to provide your personal identity number, register with Swedbank, or use the web form, you may instead contact Mälardalstrafik Customer Service. For manual payment, you will then need to provide your first and last name as well as clearing number and account number. Manual handling involves a longer processing time.
