Additional Fee - How It Works

To ensure that every journey with Mälartåg runs as smoothly as possible, it’s important that each passenger has a valid ticket before boarding. Here we explain what applies during ticket inspections and how the additional fee works if you don’t have a valid ticket

As a passenger, it is always your responsibility to purchase and be able to show a valid ticket for your journey on Mälartåg. If you cannot present a valid ticket during a ticket inspection, you will be issued an additional fee of SEK 1,500. The purpose of the additional fee is to ensure fairness between passengers — those who have paid for their trip should not have to cover the cost for those who have not.

For a ticket to be valid, it must meet the following criteria:

  • The ticket must be purchased or activated before boarding.
  • The ticket must be valid for the specific route and direction, or area/zone.
  • The ticket must be valid for the specific departure, or have current time validity.
  • Passengers traveling at a discounted fare must be able to present proof of eligibility.

Read about who is entitled to travel at a discounted fare and how to verify it.

How Do I Pay My Additional Fee?

Payment instructions are shown on the additional fee notice. In the field for OCR/message, enter the fee’s control number, which you can find at the top right of the notice, as shown in the image below.
