Total 2024: The puntcuality for 2024 was 86%. The year began with harsh winter weather, leading to a high number of cancelled departures, delays, and vehicle damage for both Mälartåg and other railway operators. During the autumn, service delivery improved, with stabilized punctuality and regularity, thanks in part to good availability of staff and vehicles. However, declining punctuality remains a challenge for railway traffic. Only just over 20 percent of the delays for Mälartåg traffic in 2024, measured in time/delay minutes, could be directly attributed to issues Mälartåg can influence. Most delays were caused by factors beyond Mälartåg’s direct control, primarily infrastructure failures, accidents, and track trespassing.
December 2024: 88 percent of trains were on time in December, an increase of 4 percentage points from November. Some of the disruptions that caused delays during the month included track work south of Knivsta in the second half of December, a downed overhead line near Norrköping, as well as power outages, multiple signal box failures around Stockholm, and a fire in Skutskär. The new 34 daily departures Stockholm-Uppsala from mid-December hade high punctuality, 95 procent.
November 2024: 84 percent of the trains were on time in November. The decreased punctuality can be attributed to the season's first winter storm. Snow and strong winds affected both vehicles and infrastructure in parts of the rail network. For instance, on the day the first snow fell, a car ended up on the tracks, halting traffic for several hours between Stockholm and Uppsala. November was also marked by numerous track and switch failures in the Stockholm area, causing long delays that had ripple effects in other parts of the system, as well as many incidents of unauthorized access to tracks at multiple locations.
October 2024: In October, 86 percent of trains were on time, an increase of one percentage point compared to September. The major delays during the month were caused by accidents on the railway. There were several incidents involving unauthorized persons in track areas and collisions, as well as weather-related accidents, including trees falling on overhead lines due to storm winds. Additionally, slippery tracks, which caused traffic stoppages, and signal failures affected various Mälartåg lines.
September 2024: Punctuality for Mälartåg remained low during September, reaching 85%, which is one percentage point better than the previous month. Several major incidents affected punctuality for the month. A train from another operator collided with a tractor trailer near Köping, which brought down the overhead lines and caused a power outage, resulting in significant disruptions. Throughout the month, there were also several wildlife accidents and trees falling onto overhead lines, contributing to delays.
On September 27, Mälartåg faced multiple issues simultaneously: a switch failure in Flen, signal failures at several locations, and a moose collision that stopped traffic. At the same time, a train from another operator needed to be evacuated due to a powerless locomotive.
August 2024: Punctuality was generally low during the summer, despite favorable weather conditions. In August, 84 percent of the trains were on time. Many of the disruptions during the month occurred in the Stockholm area, affecting several of Mälartåg's routes. Södertälje experienced multiple signal failures, a major power outage on the line to Flemingsberg, which impacted traffic for nearly a week, as well as a fire alarm on a train that led to the evacuation of the vehicle. Additionally, accidents and incidents on the tracks contributed to further disruptions in traffic.
April 2024: 89 percent of the trains were on time in April, a decrease of 1 percent compared to the previous month. The major disruptions affecting punctuality were an accident south of Stockholm that resulted in a complete traffic stoppage and a severed signal cable during track maintenance between Nyköping and Norrköping. Many cases of unauthorized individuals on the tracks, as well as a number of vehicle malfunctions on both Mälartåg and other operators, also impacted the traffic.
Mars 2024:Punctuality during March reached 90 percent, an increase of 1 percentage point compared to the previous month. Punctuality was affected by several incidents during the month. A fire in a transformer in Solna resulted in disruptions north of Stockholm, leading to subsequent delays for southbound trains as well. Additionally, a contact wire was torn between Järna and Flemingsberg, and multiple cases of unauthorized individuals in track areas throughout Mälardalen caused further delays. An accident near Nyköping also contributed to impacting the punctuality of the trains.
February 2024: Punctuality improved during February. 89 percent of trains were on time, an increase of 13 percentage points compared to the previous month. The major disruptions were due to infrastructure faults, accidents, and track maintenance, many of them in the Stockholm area. A track fault at Solna caused reductions and delays in traffic, two accidents occurred at Stockholm Södra and Solna, and cracks in a switch between Flemingsberg and Södertälje resulted in limited accessibility. Track maintenance to install a new switch at Härad led to speed reductions, affecting punctuality on the Örebro-Eskilstuna-Stockholm-Uppsala line.
January 2024: Punctuality remained low at 76 percent, an increase of 2 percentage points. The cold winter weather affected the vehicles, resulting in an increased number of vehicle damages, and the infrastructure. Several track and switch faults occurred at multiple locations throughout the month. In week 3, there were track signaling faults south of Stockholm during the morning rush hour, causing train queues in both directions, as well as at Kolmården.
